Global girl group KATSEYE were recently announced to be the star of American retailer GAP’s new “Better in Denim” campaign. The sextet is one of the many artists right now who love Y2K style, and KATSEYE are embracing the fashion of the early 2000s even more in this ad campaign.
In a video released by GAP, members Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia, and Yoon Chae are seen wearing various denim pieces—including low-rise jeans, mini skirts, and jackets—and dancing to the 2003 hit song “Milkshake” by Kelis. They each got to showcase their own distinctive style and let the world know what KATSEYE are made of.
“GAP didn’t ask us to fit in — they invited us to show up as we are,” KATSEYE said in a press release. “The denim moved with us, and every look felt like our own. We got to perform as ourselves, bringing our style and culture to every frame. That’s what makes this moment so powerful.”
For those who really want to bring out the Y2K look in denim clothing, the members shared in an interview with Billboard some styling tips they swear by.
“I love to pair a low rise with some briefs that might peak out a little bit and a crop top to really show off that tummy,” Manon said. “Or just a big shirt, maybe off the shoulder.”
Meanwhile, Lara’s “favorite thing to do with low-rise denim” is what she did in the GAP ad: unbuttoning and folding the top of her jeans. She added, “I always do that when they don’t sit low enough and then I’ll have the briefs come out once they’re folded over, because it gives me a little more hip.”
However, at the end of the day, KATSEYE’s message for fans is simply all about embracing one’s own unique style, not about following the latest trends.
Daniela told Harper’s Bazaar that she had been “wearing low-waisted [jeans] forever,” long before Y2K fashion became a thing again with young people. “I didn’t care if it was trendy or not,” she stated. “It looked good on me, and I felt good in it. That’s what matters. The way jeans fit you is so important.”
This year has been no less than magnificent for KATSEYE. Not only did the group’s second EP, Beautiful Chaos, landed in the top 5 of the Billboard 200, but they also put on a stunning performance at Lollapooza in early August. Additionally, they will embark on their first-ever tour in November across various cities in North America
