Sarah Jade is an up-and-coming independent singer-songwriter from South Africa. She recently released the single ‘I Don’t Like You’ on Dec. 15, 2023, and is also known for her single ‘My Favourite Time’ released in 2022. The latter of the two has over 28,000 streams on Spotify, proving the addictive quality of her music.

'I Don't Like You'
More about her recent release. ‘I Don’t Like You’, true to the title is the perfect break-up song to remind your ex just how much you despise them. The lyrics have a diversity that allows it to be about any other relationship, too. It’s all about the push and pull in a relationship where you’re uncertain about a lot of things but at the end of the day - the fact remains - you just don’t like that person anymore.
We need to spotlight one of the prettiest lyrics in the song - because why not show appreciation where it’s due? The line where Sarah Jade says, “Rose-coloured glasses only last so long before they rust,” this line truly stands out and highlights the theme of realization in the song through beautiful metaphor.
The repetition of the lyrics ‘I don’t like you’ also feels like a satisfying nail in the coffin of what once was.
It’s hard to nail repetition in music these days, however, ‘I Don’t Like You’ is well-balanced and pulls off the technique to a tee. This balance goes for other aspects of the song, too.
Sarah Jade’s full and earthy vocal tone with a slight twang creates an all-encompassing listening experience. From the heavy drum rolls to full-on rocking guitars, and then mellow stringouts to a chill melody - the song is completely harmonious.
One thing is for sure, Sarah Jade did a number on our ears with this single - in the best sense. We’re looking forward to seeing more from her in the future!
